Dr. Mike Deutsch is a 1998 graduate of the Ohio State University in Columbus OH. He opened the Zoo Animal Hospital in September of 2002. He has worked at several practices both here in New Mexico and also in Chicago. His first love was wildlife medicine, which was actually what got him into veterinary medicine in the first place. During flight school as an undergraduate at the Ohio State University, he started volunteering at the Ohio Wildlife Center, under Dr. Burton, and worked his way up to assistant clinic coordinator. With Dr. Burton's recomendation, Dr. Mike was able to get into the veterinary program intending to specialize in avian medicine and surgery, but he discovered his love for all kinds of animals, including the llamas, alpacas, sheep, and goats. Among the things he is most proud of is the fact that he personally spayed and neutered over 1800 dogs and cats in the Las Vegas, NM area over a year working for the PAWS organization. His hobbies are extreme TV watching, cooking, R/C airplanes, and photography. Pets include his beloved old collie Katie who has been with him since early vet school, Hobbes the greyhound, cats Buckle, Tzuras, Smoke, Flame, Ming, Opie, and Flint, Robert the greenwing macaw, Calvin the triton cockatoo, and a variety of other creatures. He is pictured here with one of three "in house" cats, the Toe Sucker. The "Toe" as he is known is a regular part of the reception process as he will accost people to be petted. His name comes from the fact that as a kitten he sucked on his toes so loudly it could be heard several feet away. Without the support of his wonderful wife Melanie and son Brandon, the practice would not be possible. |
